ISLAMIC, Umayyad Caliphate. temp. Yazid I ibn Mu'awiya, AH 60-64 / AD 680-683. Fals (Bronze, 17 mm, 2.77 g, 11 h), Arab-Byzantine type, 'Pseudo-Damascus' mint. Imperial figure standing facing, holding long cross in his right hand and globus cruciger in his left; in upper right field, inverted crescent. Rev. Large M in center; above, cross; below, officina mark of inverted crescent; around blundered Arabic legend reading darb dimashq ja'iz ('current issue [of] Dimashq'). Cf. Goodwin&Gyselen p. 82, fig. 19, type 97 for reverse. Rare. Earthen deposits, otherwise, very fine.
